Outdoor Kitchens

Bring the Kitchen Outside

You already spend time out back — now imagine doing it with a real cooking setup instead of a portable grill on a patio slab. At Volsen Custom Works, we're building outdoor kitchens for homeowners who want a legit space to cook, host, and enjoy their yard year-round.

We bring the same design-build approach we use on our interior projects — structural framing, gas and electrical rough-in, countertops, weatherproof finishes, and covered structures — all coordinated by Aaron and James. Whether you're starting with a blank slate or adding onto an existing deck or patio, we'll design something that fits your space, your budget, and how you actually want to use it.

If you've been thinking about an outdoor kitchen in Tacoma, Gig Harbor, Puyallup, University Place, or anywhere in Western Washington — let's talk. We'd love to make this one of our next builds.

Built-In Grills & Cooking Stations
Gas grills, flat tops, smokers, side burners — framed in and finished, not just sitting on a cart.
Countertops & Cabinetry
Weather-rated countertops in granite, concrete, or tile with outdoor-grade storage and access doors underneath.
Covered Structures & Roofing
Pergolas, pavilions, and roof extensions that keep you cooking rain or shine — this is the Pacific Northwest, after all.
Gas, Electrical & Plumbing
We run the utilities — gas lines, dedicated circuits, lighting, and outdoor sinks — so everything is safe, permitted, and up to code.
Owners On-Site
Aaron and James are hands-on through every phase — you always know who's building your outdoor kitchen.
Licensed, Bonded & Insured
Fully licensed in the state of Washington with complete insurance coverage for your peace of mind.

Outdoor Kitchen FAQ

What to know before building an outdoor kitchen in Western Washington.

Absolutely — especially with a covered structure. A roof or pergola with a solid cover keeps the rain off while you cook, and the mild temperatures in Western Washington mean you can grill comfortably most of the year. We design every outdoor kitchen with weather in mind so it's usable well beyond summer.

That depends on what you want, but a typical setup includes a built-in grill, counter space, storage, and a covered structure. From there you can add side burners, smokers, sinks, refrigerators, lighting, and bar seating. We'll design it around your space and budget — from a focused grill station to a full entertaining setup.

Cost varies widely based on size, materials, appliances, and whether utilities need to be run. A straightforward grill island with countertops costs significantly less than a full kitchen with a roof, sink, and electrical. We provide a detailed estimate after discussing your vision so you know exactly what you're looking at.

For most setups, yes. A natural gas line for the grill is more convenient and cost-effective long-term than propane tanks. Electrical is needed for lighting, outlets, and any powered appliances like a fridge or vent hood. If you want a sink, we'll run water and drainage too. We handle all the utility work and make sure everything is permitted and up to code.

For countertops, granite, concrete, and porcelain tile are the go-to options — they handle moisture, heat, and UV without breaking down. The base structure is typically steel stud framing with cement board and stone or stucco veneer. We avoid materials that look great indoors but won't survive a few winters outside.

In many cases, yes — but it depends on the structure. A concrete patio can usually support a kitchen island without modification. Decks may need additional footings or reinforcement depending on the weight of the setup. We'll evaluate what you have and let you know what's needed to make it work safely.

Usually, yes — especially if gas lines, electrical, plumbing, or a roofed structure are involved. Permit requirements vary by municipality across Pierce County and Western Washington. We handle the full permitting process so you don't have to figure out what's needed or deal with the paperwork.

A basic grill island can be completed in one to two weeks. A full outdoor kitchen with a covered structure, utilities, and custom finishes typically takes three to six weeks depending on complexity and permitting. We'll give you a realistic schedule during the design phase.
